American-Nigerian Research Collaboration: Lessons Learned from REACH, 2004-2010

Four Nigerian Professors will join NU Professor Richard Joseph and Nkem Dike, Associate Director of the REACH Program, to discuss vital lessons learned in inter-university collaboration between Northwestern and the University of Ibadan since a February 2004 meeting in Nigeria to pursue joint research on HIV prevention. At a Northwestern conference in November 2006, “Nigeria 2007: Political, Economic and Social Transitions”, Nigerian participants (two of whom will take part in the May 25 meeting) spoke of the myriad problems confronting Nigerian universities: escalating student enrollments, faculty brain drain, inadequate staffing, infrastructural decay, insufficient time to conduct research and publish, the difficulty of keeping up-to-date on theory, methodologies, reports writing, and other subjects.
